In May 2019, Knutson was asked to assist with a refresh of the client's existing subway system (62,000 SF) and a kitchen / cafeteria (18,000 SF).

The "subway" is a vast pedestrian tunnel system that connects different buildings throughout the downtown campus. The goal of the project was to lighten and brighten the experience for visitors and staff who use the tunnels on a daily basis, creating more attractive areas that incentivize people to connect, rest, and recharge throughout their day. A universal design was chosen to best incorporate modern decor representing the client's values and enhanced hospitality with the addition of a new cafeteria space and enclosed courtyard, as well as improved wayfinding for a more intuitive experience when navigating the system.

Knutson acted as the owners representative on the project and provided phasing schedules, bidding manuals, and budget / schedule management on this project, which consisted of six separate projects that included over 43 separate phases. We also self-performed three of the six total zones. During construction, the subway remained open for use by staff and patients.
