The Prospect Utility Plant Expansion is a strategic infrastructure project designed to support the growing thermal utility demands associated with Mayo Clinic’s Bold.Forward.Unbound initiative in Rochester, Minnesota. This expansion adds approximately 72,300 square feet to the existing utility plant, significantly enhancing its capacity and operational capabilities.

Central to the project is the integration of a combined heat and power (CHP) system, which utilizes a combustion turbine paired with a heat recovery steam generator. This system is engineered to improve energy efficiency by simultaneously producing electricity and capturing usable heat, thereby optimizing resource utilization and reducing environmental impact.

In addition to the CHP system, the expansion includes the installation of new chillers, a boiler, and emergency generators. These upgrades are essential to meeting the increased demand for heating, cooling, and backup power across Mayo Clinic’s expanding campus. This project represents a critical investment in sustainable infrastructure, ensuring reliable and efficient utility services that align with Mayo Clinic’s long-term vision for growth and innovation.
