The Andersen Building celebrates the final structural steel beam being set

A topping-off ceremony took place last week to celebrate the placement of the final steel beam on top of Mayo Clinic’s new proton beam therapy facility, marking the start of the next phase of construction.

Mayo staff in the Radiology and Oncology departments were able to sign the beam to show appreciation and signify an important milestone. Knutson team members also attended the celebration, thanking all the partners who contributed to reaching this stage of the project.

Proton beam therapy is a type of radiation therapy that uses high-energy protons to destroy tumor cells. The protons are positively charged atoms that damage the DNA of cancer cells, preventing them from multiplying. The treatment is non-invasive, painless, and precise.

Medical professionals expect a high demand for this therapy in the coming years, approximately 900 more patients will be treated at the Andersen Building to accommodate the site’s projected demand of 2,000 patients needing proton beam therapy annually by 2032.

Knutson is proud to be part of this impactful project and to celebrate the hard work of the field team and partners.
